Historic Washington’s Birthday Regatta Returns to The Barnacle for Its 30th Year
Coconut Grove, FL — One of South Florida’s most cherished maritime traditions is making waves once again. The 30th annual Washington’s Birthday Regatta will take place February 21–22, 2026, at The Barnacle Historic State Park in Coconut Grove — the former home of yachting pioneer Ralph Middleton Munroe.
This regatta isn’t just any sailing event — it’s a living reenactment of the first sailboat race held on Biscayne Bay in the spring of 1887. Organized originally by Ralph Munroe and his neighbor Kirk Munroe (no relation), that first Washington’s Birthday Regatta helped launch the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club and a tradition of spirited racing.
To celebrate the regatta’s 30th modern reenactment, organizers are inviting sailors from near and far to participate. While traditionally rigged sailboats are especially encouraged, the event welcomes all types of sailing craft. Racing will be held on Saturday, February 21, followed by a relaxed “Fun Sail” on Sunday, February 22. The regatta’s highlight will be the festive Awards Banquet and Chowder Party on Saturday evening.
“This event is more than a race — it’s a celebration of local history, maritime heritage, and community,” said organizers. “We’re excited to welcome sailors and spectators alike for this special 30th year.”
